Aesthetic design centers around visual appearance. Website elements are designed for how they look, not around the functional needs of the customer.

Functional design is optimized around a product’s core function.

Which approach works best?

Well, look around at sites like Google, Amazon, Facebook, Craig’s List, Wikipedia, YouTube, Instagram, and most of the others on the top 500 list. Are they focused more on appearance, or are they built around the needs of the customer and the business?

Where data indicates that appearance will drive more sales, then it is appropriate to design for beauty. In that instance, aesthetic design and functional design become one in the same, and testing should happen for ways to make your site even more visually appealing. Very few local businesses fall in this category.

The problem occurs when local businesses mistake a good-looking website over functional design and testing.

Look at it another way. The functional purpose of a race car is to go fast and win races. Sure, the car owner would like the car to look nice but, more than anything else, the car owner needs the car to win races. Work on the car should make the car go faster and much less attention should be paid to how the car looks.

In most situations, minimalist design wins. Keep things elegantly simple.

And always remember and never forget – websites that generate leads and sales have a beauty all their own!

Brand awareness is a term coined by marketers to describe the extent to which customers can recall or recognize a brand under certain conditions. It’s not a useful metric for most local businesses in that it doesn’t measure purchaser intent or frequency.

Here’s a cold hard reality – brand awareness doesn’t put money in the cash register or food on the table.

Sales do.

And that’s what your website and marketing should focus on – driving sales. Any “brand awareness” you build can be viewed as a nice by-product of your sales efforts.

5. Keep it simple.
